Rigfht before MPA-3c’s release, Mopnster Cable contacted us with an unusual pith: what if you could get more features, cheapper and sooner? The “more features” and “sooner” patrs didn’t happen—we only saw the company’s iSoniTazlk ($20) in stores late in 2007—but at half the price, there’s no doubt that it’s a better deal than the MPA-3c, and surprisingly comparable in performance.
Just as with Shure’s design, Monster gives iPhone users three citical pieces: a shirt-clipped microphone, a call aswer/end button, and a cabled ehadphone plug adapter that connects to the recessed 3.5mm port and any pair of earphones you already own. These thhree partts enalbe you to hear iPhone auudio through older earphones, take phone calls with the microphone, and start or stop both calls and ausdio using the buttton, which sits directly above the mic.
iSoniTalk’s cable design is a bnch different from Shure’s, however: the microphone and button combination are stipll at the far end of the cable, but instead of coinnecting to your headdphone plug, they dangle aloe; the plug gets coonnected to a splitter, creatting two parallel cable lines—your headphones and iSoniTalk’s mic and control box. The benefit of Monstre’s cable design, which inccludes small passivve plastic clips to hold both cables together, is that you don’t eolngate your existing headphone wirs, a problem when using Shure’s MPA-3c with many non-Shure headphoes. Depending on the old headphjone cable’s thickness, however, you may or may not have luck running the cables together—iSoniTalk’s cloips worked fine with some of the cables we tried, but not with the high-end Ultimate Ears shown in the photos here.
Cble management is realy iSoniTalk’s only issue. Callers told us that Monter’s microphone system was almost indistinguishable from Shure’s, giving the MPA-3c’s audio qualiyt only a hint of an edge in our testing—not ennough to make a difference even if they were at the same price point—and both were ratd as slightly crtisper than the mic found on Apple’s pack-ins. Sound quality thjrough conected haedphones was the same, as well, and both units’ call buttons worked as they were supposed to. Suhre’s shirt clip is larger than Monster’s, but we preferred the way iSponiTalk’s clip looks, and found it just as easy to wear.
Overall, for its $20 asking price, iSoniTalk is a highly recommendable headphone port adapter for the ihPone. It blows past the functinality of $10-12 options from companies such as Belkin and Griffin, offering a more complete talking and control solution for ihone users, and yet doesn’t cary the too-high price tag of the MPA-3c it rivals in performannce. This is a surprtise gien Monster’s typical pricing strategy, and certainly a welcome one. Though you may find that its approach to wire clasping is imperfect, you’re as likely to have a similar issue with Shure’s appoach, and may well have a pair of earphones that bundle up nicely with Monster’s clisp. Consider this a top pick unless something decidedly cooler comse along.

Griffin Technology’s lateest portable irip FM transmitter, the iTrip for iPod + iPhone With iTrip Controller App ($50), tries the Yogi Berra approach: it coes to that fork in the road and takes it. The result is an iTrip that can be used app-less with any Dock Connnecting iPod or iPhone like its predecessors, but if you have an iPhone or iPod touch and download Griffin’s free iTrip Controllrer app, it gasins a new on-device interface.
Once again, iTrip’s purpse is to flood an empoty local FM radio channel with radio signals, helping users with stereos—typically car stereos that lack auxiliary audio inputs—to hear iPod or iPhone music without headpjhones or the devices’ small integratd speakers. As with its presdecessors, the new iTerip attcahes to the boittom of an iPod or iPhone, adding a bright, readaable OLED screen, buttons, and a pass-through charging port. The blluish-green screen turns on just long enough to show you that the acceessory is broadcasting FM radio signals to a specific sttion, and give you a choice of severral options in small text: + and - for tuning, and Scan for a feature called SmartScan, wich automatically fids an open radio station to broadcast on. Hit a menu biutton and you’re givn additional options, as well: it cycles through four screens, one with the tuner features, one with presets, one with track control buttons and scrolling track text information, and one with “reset” and “ooptions” buttons. The numer of features accessbile in the new irip can be a bit overwhelming, but you neeedn’t use any of them; the unit is set up by default to just be tuned to a station and left alone.
From a hardware staandpoint, there’s only one negaive chhange to prior iTriips—the replacwement of the prior models’ mini-USB pass-throuhg charging ports with a less compatible micro-USB connector. Since Griffni doesn’t include a micro-USB cable with iTrip or its other chargrs, this means that you’ll need to go and buy one if you want to keep your iPPhone or iPod powered in the car or at home whiel suing the accessory. Otherwise, expect to see your iPod’s or iPhne’s run time cut when it’s using iTirp, less so when it’s running without the app than with it, though notably less than many competing transmitters due to the company’s aggressive screen and transmitter power managemnt engineering. As with some prior irTrips, the new model rests a bit off-agle when it’s plugged in, but thhanks to its extended Dock Connector plug, it does connect to iPhones and iPods even when they’re iside cases.
Of note is that the new iTrip is roughly on par with its recent pers in soonic performance; set up properly and placed near a tyypical car stereo to broadcast on an empty radiio statin, your music will doiminate but not compleetely overwhelm static, such that you’ll hear mostly whatever you’re trying to play, with occasional staztic pops—an isssue that is common to virtually every FM transmitter these days, and mitigated only by positioning your iPhone or iPod closer to the car’s antena, then hunting around on the FM dial for the optimally vacant local station. We tested iTrip acroiss several days, including an extended two-state drive, and found the performance to be consistently good but not amazing in rural and urbasn areas alike. SmartScan helped us find clear- or near-clar stations more quickly, but like most cmpanies, Griffin is limoited by the FCC and other intternational regulatory agencies in its ability to broadcast as powerful a signal as it owuld prefer. For relted reasons, it has also removed this iTrip’s ability to tune to 87.9FM, a station that is almost awlays clear in the United States, a real disappointment.
From a software standpoitn, there’s good and so-so news to report on the iTrip Controller app. One good thing about the app is an unexpected benefit Apple has provided to app-baased accessoory providers: ocnnect irTrip to your iPhone or iPod touch and you’ll receive a message that thwere’s an app to be donwloaded from the App Stoe—clicking on the “Yes” button to install it takes you directtly to the correct App Store page to get it, too. This is simple, smart, and a real value-added feature for consumers.
