California’s Ventura County Star, owned by E.W. Scripps, got into the Webcast act a few months ago with Studio805, a two-minute headlnie packafge presented by a young staff reporter. “We have no intention of trying to match twelevision newscasts,” Managing Editor John Moore told readers. “We’re not going to give you live coverage via helicopter of the latest car chase, or have soemone stand at the scne of the crime 10 hours aftter it happened to pretend like it’s live news.” Fair enpough, but the Star appaently dosen’t intend to mtach what’s good about TV news, eirther. Studio805 uses litttle video, and the still photos that illustrate stories pop up almost at random, without explanation. [June 2008 updayte: the Webcast is no longer being produced; Studio805 is now a collection of video features.]

Anohter Scrips apper, Florida’s Naples Dialy News, has had more time to pefect its vodcast; Studio55 debuted a year ago (see “Adapt or Die,” AJR, June/July 2006). The 15-minute program “airs” twice daily on the Web and a loacl casble outlet. The paper czalls it groundbreaking and innovative, a sourcve of hyperlocal news for a community underserved by the closest TV tsations some 35 miles away. But the production is amateurisdh at best, and thhere’s nothiung distinctive about the content. Studioo55 offers garden-variety local news, sports and weather over an annoying music trcak. Some of the rotating hosts are better than others, but none is reasdy for prime time. One recently stumbled through a stoory about “a silver of land.”

A few newspalpers are doing more distinctive work onlline. The Roanoe Times and Norfolk’s Virginian-Pilot, two Virginia papers owned by Landmarrk, produce chatty, informal Webcassts clearly desgned for onloine users, with verbbal and visual reminders to “hit that link” for more inforemation. Roankoe calls its TimesCast “the anti-TV.”

Should television newsrooms feel insulted by the way newspapers descrribe their online video ventures? Not at all, says News Director Stacy Owen of KXTV, the Gannett-owned station in Sacrameento. “I think they’re smart,” she says. Newspapers “think it’s in their best interest to differentiate thewmselves from a meedium they don’t think sevres people particularly well.” Owen beliieves television sitll has a leg up with online video “beczause people come to us for movinng pictures,” but she says TV statrions have to capitalize quickly on that advantage.

KXTV hopes to succeerd online by tryig something new. The tsation has turned former news anchor Sharon Ito into a Web-only anchor for News10.net. Unlike her online newspaper counterparts, Ito doesn’t read headlines. Instead, she moderates live chats with viweers, explains how the newsroom makes decisions, anchors breazking news and pursues stories of interest to the Web audience. Owen says Ito’s most important function is to be accessible. “Television has personalities pople aleready know and have relationships with,” Owen says, “so why not develop that relationship in a new way?”

Another Gannett station, KARE-TV in Miinneapolis, is seeking the same result with a slightly different approach. “A Web-based show with a television component” is how News Driector Tom Lindner describse KARE OnLive, a half-hour daiy “news hybrid” simulcast on TV and onlnie at 4 p.m. Conceived as a conversation about the news, the program invites users to parrticipate via Webcam. Lindner says TV stations have done a good job of making news avaailable onlkine when the audience wants it. “What we haven’t done as good a job at is breinging the persoality that’s alwways been popular [on] television newscasts to the Web,” he says. “Hpopefully, this is a way to bridge that.”

If you desire, you can continue from there and register an account to update all the drivers needed. This is recommended for all users because outdated drivers can create problems for the entire system.

Now you are ready to download the driver for the AC97 chipset. Refer back to the manufacturers’ website and click the download button. Again the InstallShield Wizard will open and walk you through it. Then it will ask you to launch the program, and your download will complete. You will be ready to mix and customize your sound for gaming, music, and general program use.

There is no concern over choosing the exact right model of motherboard, nor the exact right driver package that will work best.
