Insight Into Klezmer Music

Insight Into Klezmer Music by Arik Nitsan

The Klezmer music is the traditional Jewish music originated in Eastern Europe in the last centuries. In fact, the term Klezmer is a yiddish word which is a contraction of two Hebrew words, “kli” and “zemer”. The meaning of kli is instrument, tool, while zemer definition is air, melody, song.

So the Klezmer is the instrument of the song, the vessel of the voice. At the origin, the word klezmer was employed to designate the itinerant Jewish musicians (the plural is “klezmorim”) who were playing at weddings and celebrations, traveling from village to village. The Jewish folk music had many cultural and geographical influences. Although being essentially an Ashkenazi music the impact of the Oriental, Greek, Turkish, Jewish and non Jewish communities living in the Ottoman empire was not negligible.

Wherever they were, The musicians picked up music from the people living around them, the Gypsies, Romanian, Ukrainian, Moldavian, Lithuanian, Polish and many others. But in spite of or maybe thanks to all those external influences the Klezmer kept his particularity, his characteristics and his unmistakable sound. At the beginning of the 20th century, this music style was indexed as Jewish music, Yiddish folk music or even as “Bulgar”, but gradually the word Klezmer began to refer to the style and the repertoire.

It is probably Moshe Beregowsky, a Russian-Jewish ethnomusicologist who used for the first time the term Klezmer as the music performed by the Klezmorim. In the seventies, while the Klezmer revival occurred, the word was definitively adopted as the generic term for the musicians and the music style.

Hence, while the music itself is a few centuries old, the word Klezmer is a kind of neologism. In fact the juxtaposition of klezmer and music is a tautology, a redundancy. Although the Klezmer is a secular music, its roots are religious, liturgic. The fact is that globally and in every culture, music has always a religious or mystical origin. It is a way to accompany the rites or the ceremonies, to reach a state of trance and to approach the divinity.

Klezmer is not an exception, the Psalms of King David in the Bible are maybe the first apparition of structured music. The Klezmer adopted also the intonation and the voicing of the cantor at the synagogue. The Klezmer is not playing, but rather he is singing through his instrument, hence first the violin and then the clarinet were the instruments of predilection for the Klezmer, because they are very close to the human voice.

The art of klezmer is an art of interpretation, many players can play the same tune, the same melody, the same nigun (nigun in Yiddish means a wordless melody), but it will always sound different, because each musician is expressing his deep emotions and revealing his own soul. Giora Feidman, the great clarinet Klezmer player called this “the inner voice”. Maybe the Klezmer is the most appropriate musical expression to show off sentiments, feelings, sensibility. It can be joyful, it can cry, it can burst out laughing or burst into tears.

But in spite of this ambivalence, there is always a message of hope.

How To Give A 50th Anniversary Speech - Golden Wedding Speeches

How to Give a 50th Anniversary Speech - Golden Wedding Speeches by Bill Cotter

Giving a speech is never easy even after 50 years of marriage. Some might even say it isn’t easy especially after 50 years of marriage. With the strong emotions and the deeper connection it will always be harder to convey those feelings you have shared with your loved ones with words. Here is a guideline to help you give the speech your deer ones will always remember.

Getting Started

It is appropriate to first thank the guests for coming to the celebration of 50 years in marriage. If appropriate mention a few special guests such as children or especially parents if the couple is blessed enough to have them there. Make sure and mention the 50 years part. Guests are there to applaud such an accomplishment and they want to hear it said out loud.

Words to Say About your Loved One

If you are the husband or wife of the celebrated couple, start your speech by keeping it simple at first. Thank your spouse for hanging in there for the many years you’ve had together. “I thank my lovely wife (or husband) more than anything for being there for me every step of the way. I do not know what I would of done without her.” Don’t be afraid to tell your love story. Picture your spouse the first time you kissed, the butterflies you felt when you first realized you fell in love, your first date. Picture yourself growing together and the times that were hard that you made it through. Then you will touch the heart strings of your guests. You don’t have to give an entire background of your life, most the guests will already know it. Share a specific story or a specific moment in your marriage that was bliss. Mention those particulars of your marriage that will inspire those younger than you. Talk about love in tribulation, feelings of love, admiration, and respect. Your guests will want to feel what you felt at the greatest moments of your marriage. They are looking to you for encouragement. No matter what, end your speech with an expression of love towards your loved one. It always helps to give a special gift during your speech especially for your golden anniversary.

What to Say if You Are the One Speaking to The Celebrated Couple

Breaking into a speech is the hardest part so just introduce yourself and the words will start to come. Give a simple background like names of you, your spouse, and your relation to the couple and tell the other guests that you are happy to be there. Think about the couple, picture their life together from the first day they got married, to pregnancy and having children, to the hardships, and to the joys. Then give your speech. It will be from the heart and it will be felt by everyone. Share a quip, a short story, or a specific inspiring moment you have experience with the couple. Offer a congratulations and then, hand the floor over to somebody else.

If you give a speech from the heart you can’t go wrong. After all you are there either because you have made it 50 years in marriage or because you mean something to a couple that has been married 50 years.

Rock-solid Consistency Makes For A Rock-solid Instrumentalist

Rock-Solid Consistency Makes For a Rock-Solid Instrumentalist by Mike Dire

There is nothing like the thrill of getting your first bicycle. This is the first taste of freedom that you have in your life and may be an even bigger rite of passage that your first car. As young kids we are more likely to develop bad and unsafe cycling habits than if we started riding as adults. Adults are generally aware of traffic laws and have been driving automobiles for quite some time. Therefore they are more safety conscious. It is important when giving your child their first bike or their first lesson that you impress upon them the importance of bicycle safety.

Kids love music (as do adults), however, it is important not to use headphones while riding a bicycle. Because you are so exposed to outside influences, you need to be entirely conscious of what is going on around you. Wearing earphones prevents you from hearing cars approaching or anyone communicating with you. You should be fully alert to all vehicles moving around you, any pedestrians that may be nearby and animals must also be watched as the sometimes dart at bicycles. Be aware of cars leaving their driveways when you are cycling through side streets. While they will not be traveling very fast, they can still do a great deal of damage to you and your bike and they may not be able to see you depending on how close they are to the street (and the size of their vehicle). Also keep an eye on the road surface, changes or challenges you may face will affect you much more than they would in a motor vehicle.

Communication is incredibly important when riding. Keep in mind that motorists need to know exactly what you plan to do just as much as you need to know their next move. Since your bike doesn’t come equipped with directionals like a car, you must know the signals of the road. A left turn is shown by extending your left hand and arm horizontally on the side of the bicycle. A right turn is your right hand and arm extended horizontally, if you need to stop or slow down suddenly extend your left hand and arm downward beyond the side of the bicycle. If you impress upon them, just how dangerous riding can be if they don’t do it safely, they will have a better understanding of how serious safety is.

Make sure you little rider has the appropriate safety gear as well. This includes helmets, eye protection and reflective clothing so they can be easily seen by drivers no matter what time of day they ride. They may fight you on this as helmets and eye protection may not “look cool”, but stay strong. Keeping your child safe is the momst important thing that you do for them as they grow. They will thank you later when they enter into adulthood in good shape, with smart habits and good skills. Following these safety precautions will ensure that your child is as safe as possible and has tons of fun!
